Botox Q&A

What is BOTOX and how does it work?

BOTOX is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, approved by the FDA in 2002 for cosmetic purposes. BOTOX is injected into the face to reduce the activity of the certain muscles that form lines over time between the eyebrows, on the forehead, crow’s feet (corners of the eyes), marionette lines (corner of the mouth to the jawline), and bunny scrunch lines on the nasal bridge.

What does the BOTOX procedure entail?

BOTOX Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical treatment administered in our office setting. It takes about 15 minutes with no downtime, which is why it’s nicknamed “the lunchtime procedure.” Pain is minimized by using extremely thin needles for injections.  That said, those patients who are extra sensitive or fear needles can opt for a numbing cream, ice and other options to ensure total comfort during the procedure.

What results can I expect?

BOTOX Cosmetics provide visible results in 3-7 days of injection and have been shown to last between 3-6 months, although your own results may vary. Occasionally, some patients may experience slight bruising at the injection sites. These disappear quickly and can be camouflaged with make-up.

How can I be sure I won’t look frozen?

We’ve all seen people, including high-profile celebrities, who can’t move their eyebrows or foreheads. This is not a problem with BOTOX, but rather the amount and way in which it has been injected. Botox is an administer-sensitive procedure. Dr. Tarlow, who is highly experienced and a member of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine, uses BOTOX discriminatively to leave his patients looking rested and refreshed, rather than frozen.

How expensive is BOTOX?

Prices range from $9-11 unit based on total number of units used per session. That’s far less expensive, not to mention less risky, than surgery.
